George Washington-Richmond: Colonial Struggle with Turnovers

Turnovers kill George Washington in loss to Richmond

Coming off a four overtime win, there was some concern that George Washington (10-12, 4-5) would be a step or two slow. Unfortunately the Colonials looked three or four steps slow in their 76-54 loss to Richmond.

Amir Harris led the Colonials with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Richmond (16-6, 6-3) was led by Grant Golden’s 20 points.

The Spiders jumped out to a 9-2 lead. George Washington would take a 12-11 (their last) before the wheels started coming off. The lead would grow to as high as 17 in the first half.

The main culprit were turnovers and plenty of them. The Colonials would turn the ball over 12 times that led to 17 first half Richmond points. George Washington would finish the game with 18 turnovers. “We just weren’t taking care of the ball,” George Washington head coach Jamion Christian.

The second half didn’t get much better. Richmond’s lead would balloon to as much as 26 points.

Golden Era in Richmond

Grant Golden was a match-up problem all night for George Washington. The big man from Winchester, VA showed every part of his game. Golden would beat Chase Paar and Arnaldo Toro in every way possible. Golden was able to get the ball in the post and score off of the dribble and off moves on the post up. He even stepped out and hit a three pointer was good measure.

Jameer Nelson Jr.

Despite a missed dunk in the second half, Nelson Jr., at times, Nelson Jr. (11 points) was the Colonials best player on the floor. He scored George Washington’s first six points by driving the ball the hole. Perhaps he was the only player who had any legs coming off their game with Davidson. Nelson Jr. was one of the main culprits with turnovers (6) but that comes with being the only one being aggressive on the floor.
