Georgetown-Providence Preview

Georgetown hopes to continue their winning streak against Providence

The Hoyas quest for NCAA tournament consideration continues Wednesday when Providence visits Cap One. The Friars dominated the Hoyas in Providence, 76-60. Head coach Patrick Ewing said “that was the first time we played without Mac.”

Georgetown (15-10, 5-7) is riding a two-game winning streak with the latest victory coming at Butler. Terrell Allen tied his career-high with 22 points.

Head coach Patrick Ewing said Mac McClung and Omer Yurtseven were still “day-to-day”. “Mac did a little stuff yesterday but we still don’t know if they’ll going to play or not,” said Ewing. Yurtseven hasn’t practiced.

In the first game against Providence (14-12, 7-6), the Friars jumped out to a 14-0 lead. They were up 54-23 at halftime. Alpha Diallo scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds that game. Diallo was named Big East Player of the Week. He averaged 27 points and 13.5 rebounds including a career-high 35 points against conference leader, Seton Hall. “He’s probably one of the most complete players in the conference, said Jagan Mosely. He can score from all three levels.”

Ewing has seen improvement from the Hoyas since that first meeting. “We’re playing more as a unit. Our defense is a lot better.”

One of the overriding stories is still Georgetown’s limited roster. If McClung and Yurtseven are out again, only six or seven players will see action. It’s what made the 73-66 win at Butler so impressive. But with so many players playing 40 minutes a game, it’s hard to tell if the Hoyas will run out of gas and that’s a concern with Ewing. “Playing guys 40 minutes a game is rough.”
