Nelson Deserves March; Colonials Dominate St Joe’s

The AU guard is still seeking his first trip to the NCAA tournament

Time flies by especially when you’re in college. It seems like just yesterday, Sa’eed Nelson was a freshman at American. There was no easing in process. That year, head coach Mike Brennan played Nelson quite a bit.

Fast forward to Saturday’s game against Colgate. Nelson, now a senior, was leading the Eagles against Colgate. A win would give American a share of the Patriot League lead. Nelson had, what is a typical game for him, 21 points (8-16), eight rebounds, and five assists. If you’ve never seen Nelson play, he’s one of the best 6′ 2″ rebounding guards in the country. And that’s if you truly believe he’s 6′ 2″.

Unfortunately for Nelson and the Eagles, American would fall to Colgate (16-5, 7-1), 79-69. The Raiders went on a 12-0 run to begin to half but Nelson responded with his own 8-0 run but it wasn’t enough. Saturday’s loss puts the Eagles two games behind the Raiders but it’s really three since Colgate completed the sweep on Saturday.

Nelson has had a great career at American (9-10, 5-3) and fans of the Eagles and the Patriot League in general want to see his career last as long as possible or, at least, into March.

George Washington  85 St. Joe’s  69

The Colonials led by as much as 24 en route to their 85-69 victory over St. Joe’s.

Jameer Nelson Jr. had a career-high 22 against his father’s alma mater. Nelson Jr. was headed to St. Joe’s until Phil Martelli was fired. St. Joe’s loss was George Washington’s (9-11, 3-4) gain.

The Hawks tried to make a game of it in the second half, cutting George Washington’s lead down to 15 on a Lorenzo Edwards three-pointer. But George Washington would respond with a 7-0 run.
