Presidents Cup: Day 3 Fourballs

Whether you want to call in momentum, confidence, or hope, the United States has a lot of it despite being down 6.5-3.5 in the Presidents Cup.

Believe it or not, it could’ve been much worse than that. The International Team was poised to sweep all five Foursomes matches but then the United States woke up.

Two matches would end with dramatic putts on the 18th hole. Patrick Cantlay got the parade started when he hit a putt on 18 to win their match, 1-Up. Cantlay, and playing partner, Xander Schauffele won two out of the last four holes to give the American team its second point of the competition.

Minutes later, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods arrived at 18 having fought back in their match. Thomas, who had struggled all day would drain and incredible putt to stun the International team of Hideki Matsuyama and Ben An.

Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland were 2-Down going into the 16th hole. They would fight to halve the match.

As we move to Day 3, there are a couple of surprises on the US side. Woods has decided to keep the Patrick Reed/Webb Simpson pairing together. This might have been a good spot to sit Reed. Justin Thomas/Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay are going out early while the International team has decided to close with their strong pairings of Hideki Matsuyama/C.T. Pan and Adam Scott/Ben An.

The pressure will be on the Americans to win the first two matches.
