Georgetown Basketball: Hard Fought Win

Georgetown knew Georgia State wasn’t going to be easy. Just two nights earlier the Panthers stayed with Duke for most of the game before falling 74-64 in Durham.

But the Hoyas were ready for the challenge as they got big games from familiar faces.

After struggling on the offensive early on in the season, Mac McClung broke out with 25 points including 11-11 from the free throw line. James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc also contributed with solid games. Akinjo had a tough night from the field but he would finish with 11 points and four assists. LeBlanc came off the bench and scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Georgetown got off to a fast start behind McClung’s hot start. McClung was starting to show signs of getting out of his shooting slump scoring five of the Hoyas first seven points. But, he was quickly cooled off, in part, because of his own coach. Head coach Patrick Ewing continued his commitment to playing ten guys in the first half.

Not only did it cool McClung down, it seemingly took Georgetown out of their aggression. The Hoyas would get out of rhythm as they saw Georgia State go on an 18-3 run, giving the Panthers an eight point lead. Georgetown found themselves down 39-33 at halftime.

McClung started off the second half like he did the first by scoring five of Georgetown’s first seven points. Georgetown would tie the game at 43 on an Akinjo layup. It would be short lived. On Georgia State’s next possession, Kane Williams would hit a three pointer. Georgetown would come right back and tie it at 48 on McClung’s three free throws.

At the 13:40 mark, the Hoyas finally wrestled the lead away from Panthers on a Omer Yurtseven three point play.

The lead would grow to 11 Jagan Mosely’s two free throws with 3:19 left. Georgia State would get no closer than 7 points.

Notes:

Georgetown was 40-51 from the free throw line.

Yurtseven continued his double-double streak. He has a double-double in every game this season.
