George Washington Basketball: Three’s the Magic Number

At media day, new George Washington head coach warned the room that the Colonials would be shooting more three pointers this season.

He definitely didn’t lie. In today’s 76-62 win over Howard, the Colonials went 9-32 from three point line. George Washington went 6-19 in the first half and that’s what played a big part in turning a five point deficit into a 10 point halftime lead.

In was new head coach, Jamion Christian’s first win at George Washington.

In the second half, the three pointers might not have fallen as much but the damage was done. The threat of the shot opened up the lane for Armondo Toro. Sixteen of Toro’s 22 points came on layups. “We saw it in the second half. Armondo really had some open space there,” said Christian

There also has to be a willingness to allow your players to miss shots. Jamison Battle was 4-11 from the three point line and never wavered or showed a lack of confidence while shooting it. That shows how much faith and how committed Christian is to the three point shot. “You gotta have the ability to miss a few to step in there and really benefit from it.”

In the tough Atlantic 10, George Washington will need to continue to have confidence even on nights where the shot isn’t falling. It’s easier said than done but it is the key to the Colonials success this season.
