Castano-Omotoso: Preliminary Fights Results

Quentin Rankin vs Osvary Morrell

This was never a contest. Morrell knocked Rankin down in the first round and again in the second. The referee stopped the fight in the second round.

Rankin (3-0-0) TKO 2nd round

Bergman Aguilar vs Ryan Karl

Aguilar came out bringing heat throwing meaningful punches from the opening bell. Later in the round, Karl would taste the canvas as Aguilar continued to throw big blow after big blow. It look like there could possibly be an early stoppage but, by the end of the round, Karl looked like he had regained his bearings a bit.

In the second round, referee Bill Clancy warned both fighters for “rough-housing” as the fight was taking place at close quarters. The rough-housing continued in the third round as Aguilar took a knee after an obvious low blow.

The fighters would continue to maul and smother until the fight was stopped because Aguilar suffered a broken hand.

Karl (18-2-0) TKO 5th round

Nicolas Velazquez vs Shynggyskhan Tazihbay

This was one of the choppier fights of the night. Referee David Braslow had to warn fighters for clutching and grabbing throughout the early rounds.

In what proved to be a difficult fight to score, Tazihbay pulled it out.

Tazihbay (9-0-0) unanimous decision

Juan Huertas vs Gary Antuann Russell

Local favorite, Russell was up next having watched his sibling, Gary Antonio Russell win earlier in the night.

Russell got off to a fast start hurting Huertas in the first round.

Early in the second round, Russell would connect with a sweeping right hook driving Huertas into the ropes. Russell would finish the deal with a combination that would send Huertas to the canvas.

Russell (13-1-0) KO 2nd Round

Michael Crain vs Anthony Velazquez

Crain came in with a 2-4 record but was committed to slowing Velazquez down with a dedicated body attack. But the undefeated Velazquez displayed patience as he waited for his openings and countered Crain’s attack.

In the second round, Velazquez pinned Crain in the corner landing several power shots. Later in the round Velazquez would trap Crain in the same corner and land more power shots.

By the third round, Velazquez was walking  through Crain’s punches while landing his own power shots. Late in the fourth round, Velazquez hurt Crain with several combinations that backed Crain to the ropes.

Velazquez’ dominance continued in the fifth as the undefeated fighter from Springfield, VA would start to close the show.
