Why are Fans Sleeping on Danny Garcia?

There was a collective groan from fans when it was announced that Errol Spence Jr’s next fight would come against Danny Garcia (35-2) and not Terence Crawford. The fight is rumored to take place in late January.

First of all, a fight with Crawford seems to still be a little ways away because of network agreements with varying boxing promotion outlets. So fans couldn’t have realistically expected a Spence Jr.-Crawford fight in January.

That leaves Garcia as the most realistic and worthy candidate. The old adage of “styles makes fights” comes into play here.

Garcia might not be the volume puncher Shawn Porter is but he’s active enough and more accurate with his punches. Even in Garcia’s close loss to Porter, you could easily argue that Garcia was the more polished fighter in the ring.

Porter gave Spence Jr. some problems with his activity but Garcia could give Spence Jr. more problems with his technical skills and power. If Spence Jr. decides to stand in front of Garcia, he could taste the canvas.

Spence Jr. is vulnerable and the three month turnaround after his physical fight with Porter could leave him ripe for an upset.

If the fight is made, Spence Jr.-Garcia will instantly be a fight of the year candidate.
