NBA: Reaction to GM Survey (Best of the Rest)

We continue to look at NBA GM’s Survey and give you our Best of the Rest.

Who will win the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year?

NBA GMs: Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans (68%)
Making the Cut: Tyler Herro, Miami Heat

Williamson is the obvious pick. If his stats are anywhere close to what voters think it will be, he’ll win in a landslide.

But, you can’t ignore Herro in Miami. He’s a perfect fit for Eric Spoelstra and the Heat roster. He gives them versatility and athleticism around Jimmy Butler.

Who is the best defensive player in the NBA?

NBA GMs: Kawhi Leonard, Los Angeles Clippers (45%)
Making the Cut: Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz

Gobert beats out Leonard here because how difficult it is to be a defensive big man in today’s NBA. Big men have to stretch defensively out to the three point line, defend pick and roll, and be a rim defender around the illegal defense rules.

Gobert does all that and more.

Who is the most versatile defender in the NBA?

NBA GMs: Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors
Making the Cut: Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors

This isn’t shocking. Green can guard almost every position on the floor. I dare say, he doesn’t get enough credit for his defense.

Which head coach runs the best offense?

NBA GMs: Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors
Making the Cut: Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors

Like the Green pick, there’s no question Kerr is the right answer here. The Warriors will be a lights out offensive team like always despite Kevin Durant leaving. Once Klay Thompson returns, the offense will be as explosive as it was pre-Durant.

Which new or relocated head coach will make the biggest impact on his new team?

NBA GMs: Monty Williams, Phoenix Suns
Making the Cut: Luke Walton, Sacramento Kings

Williams and the Suns are still a little ways away from being in the Western Conference conversation. The Kings were in the conversation last season and the addition of Walton, should keep the train moving towards the playoffs.

Walton’s offense wasn’t made for the Lakers roster but the Kings are a perfect fit for him.
