Desperately Seeking Validation

Kevin Durant’s love-hate with social media has reared its ugly head once again. Whether it’s creating “burner accounts” to defend himself/complain about others or arguing with a teenager on Instagram, it’s clearly apparent that KD is a sensitive guy.

In his latest social media snafu, he had an exchange with Portland Trailblazers guard, CJ McCollum. We all know KD is always watching and when McCollum tweeted out this gem, we all waited for KD’s response.

The tweet was referring to KD jump onto a 73 win team that he had just squandered a 3-1 lead against. That’s what makes it so different from LeBron. When James left for Miami, he didn’t go to a ready made winner nor did he got to a team that had just eliminated them from the playoffs.

Personally, I don’t begrudge either one for leaving to go to another team. It’s where we are in sports and I love the fact that it puts pressure on owners who have superstars not to waste their better years. Just ask Charles Barkley or Patrick Ewing if they would have been willing to take on another superstar so they could beat the Bulls and, if they’re being honest, the answer is “yes”.

But unlike LeBron, KD seems to want validation from his peers and he isn’t getting it. So, in typical KD fashion, he shot back.

Durant has lived a pretty charmed life. When he played for the Thunder it was a win-win for him. He was able to absorb all the success and have Russell Westbrook take all of the blame. It was as if people felt sorry for Durant because he had to play along side of an all-star point guard. In James’ first stint in Cleveland, he played with the likes of Boobie Gibson… count your blessings KD.

This will go away pretty quick because we expect this from Durant. He’s proven to be nothing more than a modern day front-runner and that’s fine. He is going to rack up rings and NBA Finals MVPs. The Warriors will be the overwhelming favorite (again) to win the title this season.

What’s obvious is KD isn’t going to win the adulation from his peers that he’s so desperate to have and there aren’t enough burner accounts to fix that.
