Instant Reaction: Georgetown vs Howard

Georgetown came into tonight’s game looking to extend their winning streak to 7 games against their hometown neighbors, Howard University. For those who thought the game would be over very early was wrong as Howard kept pushing their neighbors.

Kaleb Johnson got off to a quick start for the Hoyas by scoring 10 early points (finished with 18 points on 6-6 shooting) including two three pointers. The Hoyas focused on getting early paint touches in the offense prior to looking for the jump shot. As the lead grew, Georgetown lost focused allowing Howard to get several rebounds cutting a 14 point lead to 7 on a jump shot by Charles Williams.

But Georgetown stemmed the momentum as Jahvon Blair’s three pointer started a 17-5 run that saw the lead grow to 19 as the Hoyas punched the ball back inside.

Govan recorded his fifth double double of the season by halftime as he scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes while the Hoyas held Howard’s leading scoring, RJ Cole, to 7 points on 2-10 shooting in the first half.

But the second half the Bison would show fight. After struggling in the first half, Cole came out and hit his first two shots. Charles Williams jumped into the act as his three point shooting propelled Howard right back in the game. Williams would finish with 28 points including shooting 6-9 from the three point line. But the Hoyas would respond and push the lead back to 16 on a Govan layup. Eventually the lead would get to 20 but the Bison were a game bunch tonight.

A 13-1 run by Howard cut the lead to 8. Eventually the Hoyas saw their lead get down to 5 before they responded. A Derrickson 3 pushed the lead to 10. Howard responded with a bucket but Georgetown would close the game on a 6-0 to close out a hard fought 81-67 victory.

Jessie Govan finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds.
