Under The Shell: Culture Shift

The Terps have road wins at Texas and Minnesota but it hasn’t come without obstacles. After 4 games, the Terps are on their third quarterback with a trip to Columbus this Saturday.

No matter the results, what Coach DJ Durkin has done shouldn’t go without notice. After a home loss to UCF, he rallied the troops and got a win over everyone’s darling, PJ Fleck and his Gophers. The word is “culture” is thrown around so much it’s lost a lot of its meaning but you can see a culture shift in College Park.

They lose starter Tyrrell Pigrome at Texas and Kasim Hill walks in and leads the team to a win. You lose Hill and Max Bortenschlager steps in and leads the Terps to their second big road win of the season.

“That’s Max every day,” Maryland coach D.J. Durkin said. “The difference was he had a team around him that was playing with a resolve, a determination of just a group of guys that decided to come together and do something special.”

Kudos to all of the quarterbacks staying engaged after a tough battle in the Spring. That shows strength in the program when you can roll through three quarterbacks in four weeks and have three wins against the competition they’ve faced. You would expect that at schools like Alabama but Maryland?

Ohio State on the road is a tall order but the Terps looked poised to be competitive even though the guys out in Vegas don’t feel the same (Buckeyes are -31). That’s a very high number especially when the Buckeyes will be without the services of Dre’Mont Jones. That number and the fact that Ohio State chose Maryland as their homecoming game should provide plenty of motivation.

No matter the results, fans of Maryland can count on a Grade A effort on the road. You can always count on that from teams with established cultures.
