Wizards Training Camp preview

Wizards are off to another season with high expectations and its starting today with training camp. Wizards and staff completed media day on Monday but it’s now on to the hard work.

The biggest story going into training camp is the Markieff Morris surgery. Morris had surgery on an sports hernia injury and is expected to be out of training camp and at least a month of the regular season. Most would hear that and think the worst for the Wizards but’s it no reason to worry. This offseason Wizards signed former Hawk Mike Scott. Scott is familiar with the DMV area. He’s from VA and went to UVA so it wont be difficult for him to get accustomed. He’s can knock down the perimeter shot and can provide the same energy, grit, and attitude that Keef would bring, and add that to the bench once Morris gets back. His injury will also allow coach Brooks to do more small-ball line ups with Porter and Oubre both on the court at the same time. Mike Scott now has the benefit of playing with John Wall, he will be JUST fine.

Something else to make note of this year is what will Wizards do with Oubre. There is an option on his contract after this year but I see no reason why the Wizards wont be picking that up. Wizards finally have guys on the staff who can develop guys, unlike they did in the past. Wizards should be picking up his option and continue to watch his growth has a player. I’ll be looking to see how his shot creation is doing in training camp. Oubre has the potential to be a key piece to go along with their big 3 going forward and I think he’ll fulfill those expectations.

Wizards have a few undrafted guys like Michael Young and Devin Robinson who will also be getting a chance to make the roster. What they do is more important that is was before now that Morris is injured. One can likely make a roster spot. It’ll be a very exciting training camp in Richmond again as the Wizards look to build off of last year.
