Power 5: Eve of Championship Week

  1. UCLA (26-3) – UCLA swept through Arizona as they continued their winning streak. The Bruins have won 7 in a row with little to no fanfare as a team. The fanfare has been around Lonzo Ball’s father, LaVar Ball. What fans are missing is a team that can score with any team in the country. The question will be about their defense. Will the be able to get enough stops in March?
  2. Kansas (27-3) – The sun rises in the East and Kansas wins the Big XII. I don’t know which one you can depend on more. Like UCLA, Kansas is on a 7 game winning streak. We’ve gotten so bored with Kansas’ dominance that people have forgotten all about the Big XII as a whole.
  3. Oregon (26-4) – The co-Pac 12 leaders have won 5 in a row since their loss to UCLA. The Ducks did struggle on the Bay Area swing at Cal and at Stanford. The Bears lost a double digit lead on their home floor and got Dillon-ed with .2 seconds left when Dylan Brooks hit the game winning 3. Against the Cardinal, it took a Jordan Bell stick back with 14 seconds left for the Ducks to pull it out.
  4. Villanova (27-3) – In many people’s eyes, Villanova is still the top team. They are a top team that seems to have a bug-a-boo with Butler. The Bulldogs swept the Wildcats including a 74-66 win in Philadelphia. But, this isn’t a team you should worry about. The veteran presence will take over in March and those guys have proven they can go all the way.
  5. Gonzaga (29-1) – The Bulldogs had the number one spot on lease. Once again, BYU was able to go to Spokane and walk away with a win. The Cougars erased a 16 point deficit on the road. The loss could cost Gonzaga a number one seed depending on what the top teams in the power conferences do in their conference tournaments. The Zags were one game away from an undefeated season.
