Big East Tournament Opening Games Quick View

On March 8th it will be startling to see Georgetown face St. John’s in a first round game. Throughout the glory years of the Big East you would expect one or both teams to be seriously competing to cut down the nets at Madison Square Garden. Now, both teams will be playing to extend their season another day.

In the first meeting, Georgetown used a balanced attack on offense and stingy defense in the second half to blowout the Red Storm. LJ Peak scored 16 points that included a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. The Hoyas shot 33 free throws making 27 of them. They held St. John’s to just 19 points in the second half.

New York City – St John’s 86  Georgetown 80

St. John’s brought the offense for their rematch with Georgetown. Freshman Shamorie Ponds shot 10-15 from the field as he poured in 24 points for the game. After only scoring 19 points in the second half of the first game, St John’s erased a one point halftime deficit on their way to scoring 51 points in the second half.

Trevon Bluiett’s 20 point, 7 rebound performance led Xavier to the 11 point win in the first meeting. The Musketeers were 7-11 from the 3-point line in the first half but only had a 7 point lead at halftime. DePaul got as close as 4 in the second half before Xavier when on a 6-0 to push the lead back up to 10.

Chicago – Xavier 79  DePaul 65

Once again Trevon Bluiett led the Musketeers to victory. Bluiett registered a double-double scoring 24 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Xavier owned the boards, out-rebounding DePaul 39-33. The Musketeers 15 offensive rebounds led to 19 second chance points. Nineteen DePaul turnovers led to 18 Xavier points.
