Power 5: One For the Ages

Kentucky’s Malik Monk had a game that you can only dream about. On one of the largest stages of the non-conference season, Monk poured in 47 points against the North Carolina Tar Heels. This included, what proved to be, the game winning shot.

This propelled the Wildcats back into our Power 5.

  1. Villanova (11-0) – The Wildcats went into the exams period on a high note as they dismantled Temple, 78-57. Up next is a home date versus American University.
  2. Duke (10-1) – Even though most concentrated on the fact that the Blue Devils only beat Tennessee State by 10, the real news is they finally have their entire team. Harry Giles finally made his debut. Giles was 0-1 in four minutes. The early season MVP for Duke has been Luke Kennard. Kennard had 24 points vs Tennessee State and has scored 20+ points four of his last five games.
  3. UCLA (12-0) – The Bruins show they can win even when they don’t have their “A” game. After a 102-62 over UC Santa Barbara, UCLA struggled against Ohio State. Lonzo Ball had a rough game but Bryce Alford and Aaron Holiday had 20 points a piece in the victory.
  4. Kansas (10-1) – Davidson is that team that will always be a pain (in a good way). That didn’t change in their game against the Jayhawks. But, after a close first half, Kansas outscored the Wildcats 47-28 in the second half. Freshman Josh Jackson continues to grow. Jackson had 18 points, 8 rebounds.
  5. Kentucky (10-1) – Kentucky’s win over North Carolina could be the game of the year and we haven’t even gotten to the conference season. Monk’s 47 points was spectacular but De’Aaron Fox’ 24 point, 10 assist game was also key in the 103-100 victory.
